Last month I bought a rock tumbler to polish stones—a new hobby. I gathered a variety of small stones, dumped them into the tumbler, and turned it on.
Actually, I completely forgot about my new hobby and left the tumbler going 24/7 for about 30 days. To my astonishment, when I dumped the tumbler on my kitchen table, more than a dozen little stone figurines spilled across the tablecloth (see picture). The intricate detail and variety were stunning! I could hardly believe that the random tumbling action had produced such remarkable works of art. I shared my rock menagerie with a friend who assured me that if I had let the tumbler run long enough, eventually the little stone animals might actually have come to life.
DO YOU BELIEVE ME?
If so, I have some worthless swamp land I’d like to sell you at prime real estate prices.
Wait a minute! Think how many people believe that the universe with all its mind-boggling complexities including macro and microscopic wonders is just the product of millions of years of chance- and random-driven natural processes. A PhD microbiologist university professor acquaintance told me that he has spent his entire lifetime studying a single cell and that he and his colleagues aren’t even close to comprehending and resolving all the inter-related intricacies and elusive mysteries it represents.
The universe, the design and complexity of the human brain and body, the millions of diverse animal species (plus fish, birds, reptiles, insects, plant life, etc.), the yet unexplored ocean depths, the exploding scientific knowledge from the invisible microscopic world to the uncharted reaches of the multiverse in which we live could not possibly have emerged from chance natural processes no matter how many millions of years nature’s unaided “tumbler” turned. Intricate design demands an intelligent Designer. There’s a Name for that Designer; it’s “God.” Of course He may have chosen to design and direct natural processes into His creative work, but without God, the creation would be as impossible as my mini stone figurines.
The Bible reminds us that nature so clearly evidences the existence of a Creator that all people are “without excuse” for not worshiping Him (Romans 1:19, 20).
The good news is that the infinitely great Creator knows us, loves us, and sent Jesus (God in a human body) to be our Rescuer, Friend, Helper, Savior, Counselor, Lord and King. He is infinite beyond our comprehension yet personal and knowable through Jesus.
Don’t fall for the delusion that we and everything around us emerged from a random and impersonal universe like the rock figurines out of my imaginary tumbler. Acknowledge your Creator–Worship Him; love Him; surrender to Him; learn about Him; and entrust your life to Him.
